Chelsea agree deal for Filipe Luis.

Very similar to the recent deal for Diego Costa, this agreement between Atletico and Chelsea really does not surprise any football fan worth his salt, having been on the rumour mill for months now! The deal is rumoured to be around the £20million mark, not too bad for a title winning left back in the form of his life, especially when looking at the recent inflated transfer prices!

Chelsea have been looking for a new left back for a few seasons now, due to academy graduate Ryan Bertrand never seemingly reaching his potential and the ageing Ashley Cole now having left for AS Roma.

It’ll be interesting to see how this affects Cesar Azpilicueta, who despite being a right back, played predominantly at left back last season, often being very consistent and earning himself the affectionate nickname of ‘Dave’ from Chelsea fans. I can only presume that ‘Dave’ will now battle with Branislav Ivanovic at right back, a selection struggle that any manager would be delighted to have!

But enough about current Chelsea players, as aforementioned, Filipe Luis joins Chelsea off the back of a highly successful Atletico Madrid campaign, reaching the final of the Champions League and winning Liga BBVA, breaking the 9 year duo dominance of Spanish superpowers Barcelona and Real Madrid. It remains possible to argue that Filipe contributed a great deal to this success, offering rampaging runs from left back, racking up three assists and one goal. Yet Filipe also made sure not to forget his defensive responsibilities, making an average of 3.8 tackles per game. Interestingly enough 1.3 more tackles on average than fellow Brazilian Marcelo, who one could argue was far too attacking in Brazil’s recent destruction by Germany, some would argue that Filipe Luis was a much better choice at left back for Brazil, being far more rounded and defensively solid, however that’s a discussion for another day!

There is little doubt that FIlipe will unfortunately (Tottenham fan here) strengthen what was already a pretty solid Chelsea defense, however I bare no ill towards Filipe so I hope he puts the disappointment of not making the Brazil World Cup Squad behind him and continues with his sensational form.
